A hall effect is a semiconductor device that reacts to a magnetic field.
In my case, the hall effect is a switch that turns on when a magnet is near.

I went completely overboard (or should that be off the rails) and wanted the levers on the side of the class lamps to select the color.
Those levers normally swing the green filter in between the lamp and the lens on the prototype.
I attached a small magnet to an arm connected to the levers.
The lever swings the magnet over to the hall effect devices and switches on either the white or green LEDs.
