Re: weed killer

Using the Fairmont Octopus was not only prototypical, it was ubiquitous!

Flame will not kill off established weeds, but it will destroy annual weeds. To get the pre-established weeds a plain old 2,4-D
formula is just fine. Once knocked down, an Octopus will maintain a maintained look going forward.
Octopus was rail mounted. Weeds outside the reach can be killed with 2.4'D and maintained with a "grass burner" propane torch, quite portable.

WARNING I shouldn't have to but you know...

Check fire danger with local authorities before even striking a match
Burning best done with NO wind, and none expected for the day
When finished burning, stick around with fire extinguishing equipment long after you have quit burning
That means stay right there, not nearby- RIGHT THERE and observe the posibility of re-ignition

Fire is just like railroad crossings, expect one from any direction at any time
If it re-ignites, to you it will seem like a BLEVE

Sand along the grade is good to prevent weeds from sprouting or becoming established; it is also good to knock down and contol flames; a flat long-handle shovel is good to take along

Allowiing weeds and brush or shrubs to grow around any bridge structures must be forbidden; you can't inspect, and should fire find this treasure it will multiply your sorrows!!! LANDSCAPING HAS IT'S PLACE-KEEP IT THERE!

SHOULD CREOSOTED WOOD CATCH FIRE

Water won't help much. Take a shovel and scrape the hot creosote down and off. Extinguish flames around it. If you have sand, cover the burned area to cool it off. When the flames are out, spray with water to stop the smoking.

A fire isn't out until it says it is out. Some take longer than others to speak.
Little is more important than taking time to make sure is is all out cold.

My favorite times to burn include

After winter
After a hard rain

A clean burn is the result of bone dry fuel. Otherwise there will be black incompletely burned fuel.
