i have done that also...only long term the phosphor bronze valves are much more rugged than brass and any wear then goes on the face rather than the valve(s)...but in reality these pumps don't get the wear.

I have one that is 40+ years old and brass on brass and...just fine...but from an engineering standpoint -> valves are easier to 'reface'...or just throw away

This is what I am doing on my current loco project... valves are bearing bronze, surfaces are phosphor bronze

I bought one of those pieces. At $25.00 it is affordable enough that if the PEEK material doesn't work the loss is not too great.

To Bill Shields point the cross sectional drawing on the pump in the current issue of LSORR shows some sort of retention device to hold and move the PEEK valve. There may also be some sort of valve balancing device in there too. Will have to wait until the next issue to get the details of how the PEEK valve was retained and positioned.

Balancing is immaterial on a valve that small.

Pump is a very ingenious design. PEEK will work but cannot be crammed into a 3/4" design

Bill, what gauge is that loco? How will the material for the port face be attached to the cylinder material?
Looks interesting!
