Camelbacks

Post by hoppercar »

Looking for a new locomotive project in the shop?...ive kinda become interested in the jersey central 4_6_0 camelbacks...the more research I do, the more fascinating they become..lol.....was wondering if anyone out there might know of a preservation society, with drawings and information on them ?

Look into the Anthracite Railroad Historical Society - www.anthraciterailroads.org. They cover all the railroads that ran Camelbacks.
Dave Sclavi (Trainman 4602) built several CNJ Camelback Ten-Wheelers.

I am also interested in any information on building a 4-6-0 camelback. I talked to Dave already several months ago and he does not remember much about the locos as he sold the castings and drawings many years ago.

Hoppercar,

Anthracite Society does/did have a few prototype drawings for your quest. They also had a bunch of other rrs and other wheel arrangements. If you don't get lucky there, I think I can help you out. Feel free to email me at:

The Reading society has a huge number of drawings available. I got several for my 0-4-0 camel project. I know you said CNJ but the Reading had a lot of camelbacks as well.

There was also some odd wheel arrangements. CNJ had 4-8-0 Camelbacks I think.

Working on my reading 0-4-0 Camel as we speak.

Check out the movie “Juggernaut” on youtube. com. Produced in 1915, it has a scene showing a camelback pulling a three-car train falling through a wooden trestle. Obviously not filmed in California (no anthracite-fueled camelbacks operated in California!).

I am currently building a 4-8-0 camelback in 1/8 scale. It will be dual gauge - 7-1/4 and 7-1/2. It is modeled on an 1899 Brooks design used by the CNJ and the DL&W. I have very basic general dimensions of the prototype - wheel diameter, distance between wheels, etc. I am using Allen Models drawings for their consolidation and their ten- wheeler for reference. It is definitely a kit-bash! Marty Knox built a boiler for it (received it last summer) and the chassis is nearing completion. I hope to have it running in 2022. I am writing a blog to document the build. Anyone is welcome to follow my progress at www.timbgsteam.com

I run a 2-8-0 camel 1lin 1.5" scale on propane.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I have always liked the odd designs like the 4-8-0. NdeM had some standard gauge ones that look like USRA ish designs. There were actually some narrow gauge ones in the Black Hills built by ALCO (Schenectady). Having recently been to Colorado RR Museum in Golden I have been wondering if the Brooks 2-8-0 #30 actually started life as a 4-8-0. There is a really big spacing between the cylinders and the first driver. I don't think you could put a 26" wheel behind it, but a 20 (as was common on the black hills engines) might fit. I have always though the reason behind 4-8-0 wheel arrangements was axle loading and adheasion, but its lack of success makes me wonder if the 4 wheel lead truck proved to be just too inflexible for the tight radiusses(?).... radii (?).... curves on most railroads. Brooks did make a similar 0-8-0 switcher for ETWNC. Any thoughts?

As long as we are talking about Reading 0-4-0 camelbacks.... Can anyone recommend a good book on Reading or Camelbacks?
