propane question

I would like to see photos of your burner for the locomotive. I have a small 1” scale locomotive that I would like to fire with propane. Are you using an arch? What did yours burn before?

Chris, I haven’t designed or made the manifold yet, but I made 6 scaled down “Marty” burners to use.. I’m hoping all 6 will fit in the small firebox..
This is a new locomotive so it never ran on anything yet..
I’m planning on using an arch too..

Bill Moorewood used to put his tank inside the tender and fill it with water...

I run tanks in air, through a BBQ regulator capable of 100,000 BTU and discharges at 10 psi.

The discharge pipes from there then run through the water in the tender to the needle valves (in water also) where most of the pressure drop occurs. (run at 1 psi) Icing not a problem in the lines or controls but frequently the TANKS begin to ice up - which tells me what the level of liquid is inside the tank.

The propane devices in the tender water also cool the water, allowing your injectors to work better.

Another benefit of having the tanks/fittings, etc. in water - if there are leaks you'll see bubbles ...

These copy the “Marty” design, but smaller...

i run my 3/4" hudson on 6 blast pipe burners...look like big torch burners...mounted under the throat sheet, pointed back toward the fire-door.

At running pressure, they make a flame some 8" long...put them together and you have a sheet of flame 8" long by 4" wide.

an arch in the firebox gets the long flame to curl up and around toward the tubes and heat things very nicely.

in concept, it is very similar to what is done with an oil burner.

If you can submurse the tanks in a water bath it will help to keep them from freezing up. If the tender is large enough that would be ideal since it keeps getting refilled with warmer water. Or a tank around the bottles could be drained and refilled when refilling the tender if the water is getting to cold.

Rob, in my case it's exactly what's going to happen.. These will be for the B&O Docksider, and being that the on board water tank on it is so small, I was planning on having an auxillary tank on my riding car.. The two propane bottles will sit in the aux tank..
