I remember reading about when Uintah was ordering locomotives from Baldwin, they specified the maximum grade for the line as being 7%. This was needed because the crown sheet was sloped to match the grade. The Baldwin designers concluded that this had to be a mistake, and requested clarification. It wasn’t a mistake!

It truly was an impressive railway. Stocky yet maneuverable and powerful. Love the story of every locomotive there. Gotta love narrow gauge!

Here is a rare image of the #21 found in the archives of the Denver Public Library that is poorly documented, which makes it hard to find unless by accident. Enjoy.
