mallet locomotive

Post by hoppercar »

many years ago my dad built a 2-6-6-2 mallet locomotive, lettered for the great northern...It was sold to a man in utah, I seen one time it had been repainted black. Has anyone seen this engine, or know the name of the person who bought it

Can you share more info about the locomotive's scale, gauge, or where built?
And was it a true Mallet or a simple articulated?
Those facts could help identify it to answer your question.

I remember seeing a 2-6-6-2 down at mid-south one time during the mid 1990s, or sometime along there. I don't even remember if it was lettered or not, I just remember hearing that it was pretty new. Never saw it but the one time. Same locomotive, I would assume.

I believe Steve Flanders bought it. I met with him at a track in KC and he told me that he was heading up there to buy it. I don't know if he still has it? He sells a lot of stuff on Discover live steam. I think also owns S&S short lines? You might try looking him up.

Hopper Car

Here is a picture of the Mallet owned by Steve Flanders. Hopefully you'll be able to identify if it is indeed the one built by your dad. If it is, He did splendid work!

That long cover over the extended piston rod has to be a pretty good identifying feature.

Wonder if it has a true "Belpaire" firebox? Or, are the "shoulders" on the firebox dummied? This was a very distinctive feature on Great Northern locos.
