New steel wheels being offered

Post by Adirondack »

Hi folks. I've been hired to create new wheel patterns for a 15" line out west. I mentioned to my client that I know a lot of other builders would be interested in the wheels, so I thought I should loop you all in. I'll be running the 3D print for the pattern and corebox this weekend, and it should be ready for the foundry shortly thereafter.

The wheel itself is roughly 11.25" in diameter by 3.5" thick, and comes cored for a 1.25" or larger axle. I have no idea as to pricing, but I know he plans to run them in steel.

My client is Matt Starman, sps700 AT gmail.com and you should let him know that you are interested and that I sent you.

Tell your friends!

A little locomotive with 4 wheels on the track is a lot more fun

Looks like these wheels are for 5" scale? Such as the Redwood Valley? That's a wide wheel at 3.5".

Watch the wheel pattern being 3D printed!

Note the exceptional surface finish straight off the printer.

Looks nice! Do you get a better surface finish with that orientation?

Also great to see the Moi/NURBS work, do you know if MoI is any better at handling fillets than Rhino?

Thanks. Yes, it fits better on the build plate and handles the curves much better in that orientation.

I love Moi (from the creator of Rhino BTW) but it’s fillet engine is not perfect. Sometimes I need to bring a part into Inventor to create a complex fillet with compound curves. Moi is good for about 90% of my work.

Interesting, I've also been trying to print out some wheels and should give that a try.

The fillets in Rhino are OK for simple things, buy trying to re-create shapes like castings with complex curves seems impossible. I've also had to bring my models into third party programs for the fillet work.

The latest version of Rhino has a new type of geometry called sub-division surfaces, which looks like it might be easier to create complex fillets with, but I'm still trying to get my head around how it works...

Nice!
I know NOTHING about 3D printers.
Can you please describe what printer you used, and how long it took to make the pattern?

Thanks Harold!

I used a Creality CR10s Pro printer, eSun PLA+ filament, and sliced the 3D model for printing using the Creality slicer program.

The actual CAD process went fairly quickly (perhaps an hour or two), once the correct profile was determined from the client's original sketches. Actual printing took FIVE (5) full days! I also have a corebox to print, which should take 2 days or so. The best part is, if something happens to the pattern, I just hit "print" and an exact duplicate will be ready in the same amount of time.

Always happy to answer questions.

Chris

Thanks for the links. I was thinking that the printer might not be affordable, but it certainly is. Not fast, but neither is making a pattern from wood.

How will your pattern be used? Without being split, it doesn't lend itself well to the typical sand mold.
