The Strasburg Railroad, in Lancaster County, PA, has a working steam locomotive shop. They give tours daily.

I missed the tour the one time I was there, but fully intend to go back.

The tour is really good.

Don't forget to hit the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, which is literally across the tracks.

If you have kids with you, stay at the Red Caboose Motel:

Maybe even stay there if you don't.

I stayed there when I was a kid and we brought our kids there too.

Then there's the National Toy Train Museum, which is on the other side of the parking lot for the motel:

Ed,

When you go, take the shop tour on a Saturday. The tours are from 12 noon to 1 PM because that is lunch time and no one will be working. If you do it on a Saturday, their day off, the tour guide will spend a lot more time in there with you.

My son just said yesterday that we need to go there. I think he was more interested in staying at the Red Caboose Motel.
