Re: 10 USRA Mikados
Harry's been trying to get me involved here. So here goes. I am working on 2 Mikados. One, a standard Heavy that I will probably sell at some point, the other a CB&Q O1a. Likely 4960 in her "pristine" condition. Major difference is Delta trailing truck versus Hodges.
Attached photo is from early 2015. One set of frames coming off the mill. I have separated them. I clamped the frames, drill holes and inserted roll pins. These were waterjet'd. Found a local company that carried A36 1" plate in stock. And I didn't have to buy the whole plate. Had three sets cut out. One set for Harry. Then they were annealed. Then Blanchard Ground. I might have gone overboard. But there is no warp and they flat.
Off to start cooking steaks.

Re: 10 USRA Mikados
I used my first frame to transfer holes into the two more sets. I have them setup to mill the binder areas now. On the cnc, I'm roughing out the link support brackets.
Dale,
Noticeably different between machining your frames and the original laser frames. The laser ones warped.....but they've been pressed back straight. A little tinkering, but they'll be ok.

Re: 10 USRA Mikados
I had been considering getting started on the link support brackets since I recently drilled the holes in the crossties. But since you have them in process, I will not worry about them.

Dale,
Two sets will be headed your way along with the link supports and some misc pieces.
I've been procrastinating on the larger brackets, but I'm going to try and run them next. They're considerably larger. I hope I can machine them with no problems.

Cool - thanks.
Pictures of stacks of parts from Springtime last year. Some hiding under the lathe. Yeah Harry, I had forgotten about the photo I took. Was the spreadsheet I sent you sufficient?

Here's a link to how I dealt with the interface between the Driver counterweight and the crankpin/hub boss area.

Re: 10 USRA Mikados
Hi all,
Updates on my progress. Wheels have had their keyways broached. I did pairs back to back as shown in one picture. I will quarter the axles when the time comes. You can see my jig for crankpin boring, broaching and turning the final profile. I used the crankpin hole to drive the driver. In the broach plate are 4 countersunk holes to mount on a bridgeport vertical mill to bore and ream the crankpin holes. I decided to use reamers on the holes. Sure, there is some extra cost, but I just needed to get close to the final dimension with a boring head. Less frustrating and worrisome. The other 4 countersunk holes are for mounting to a faceplate obviously. The plate was originally a plate for a railroad switch. The 4 crude square holes are left over from that former purpose. But they came in handy.
I originally envisioned having the center pin and crank pin only to mount and keep the driver parallel to the faceplate. That did not work. I don't remember the number, but it was way out. So I started to try to figure out a quick inexpensive way to shim the driver. I found four nuts where the thickness was within a thousandth or 2 of each other. To hold them took a couple iterations. But I made some square plastic blocks and threaded holders with my CAD software and 3d printer. You can see them in one picture with the nut sitting between the ways of the lathe. The diameter of the plastic pin allows me to add and hold a feeler gauge leaf between the nut and plate. Using this method I was able to shim all drivers to keep 2 thousandths or less of axial run out. Without the feeler leaves I could get up to 5 thousandths of run out. One pic shows the dial indicator set up to check for axial run out. Looks like the exposure blew out the image of the dial face.
So in one pic, I have 8 drivers profiled with the other 8 yet to go. And I am happy to report as of last night all 16 drivers for both locos are profiled. WHEW - that's done.

Re: 10 USRA Mikados
Just back from the waterjet company. The CB&Q O1A mikado has a Hodges trailer, so the cradle and side rails are a bit different. I'll TIG the cradle parts together ala Jan-Eric Nystrom in a Live Steam article about a year ago.
