Are you thinking of overheating the valve packing?
Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build
Yep, every little thing that gets done brings me closer to completion. Just a few thousand more to go!
Just a little plagiarism going on here. I did rotate them 90 degrees if that counts

My Ten Wheeler and Mikado have similar setups and they work just fine. The vent valve does not interferer with the safety valves' discharging steam.Bill Shields wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 1:34 am I would express mild concern about the portion of the valve mechanism that is in line with the steam discharge.
The vent valve is for putting boiler treatment into the top, for letting oxygen out during fire-up, venting during shutdown, and for whatever else creative minds think of.

I was thinking more of long term erosion damage to the vent valve....having been on the receiving end of a steam blow down that carved a huge crater in to an asphalt work area.
Probably not a realistic worry in our scale

Nope, especially given the limited times the safety valves will vent steam.

if you try to roll a tube in a shallow groove, you can end up making it oval instead of bending it.
this is why tube benders have 'pockets that are deep....
grooves in these 3 wheel roller machines are generally used to form rod -> not tube...
These are the nominal dimensions I came up with:
1st grove - .173" wide w/ .097 deep pockets - overall .194" (tight for 3/16" tubing)
2nd grove - .210" wide w/ .117 deep pockets - overall .234" (?)
3rd grove - .257" wide w/ .141" deep pockets - overall .282" (ok for 1/4" tubing)
So, the tubing would sit deeper in the rollers.
If the rollers can fit thru the lathe bore, I could make them any size I want.

sitting deep in the roller is one thing....having the tube FIT the groove is another.
generally, these things (such as you have) are not intended for tube bending....

In total agreement.
Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build
I have been looking at tubing benders and there is a lot of them to choose from. Any ideals on the best one for what we do?

I have several from various manufacturers, each has its uses... including a few I have made or been made by very good friends.
Been maybe 40 years since I purchased one.
The big problem is that there are very few benders for the small tubing we use.
I have and rarely use the big spring things.
Make no mistake about it. Bending tubing is an art.
I use a lot of ells...
Look at how they do it on the swagelok site, they are the Rolls Royce of the business.
