Well done! I suspect that you've notice a distinct difference in machinability when you tackle the finish machining. You'll also benefit by the weldments being far more stable now.

A move you will not regret. It is a win win decision.

Particularly if you are going to be drilling, milling or tapping anywhere near the weld..not just IN the weld.

Are you going to lap the top surface or still considering a drop in valve plate?

I think all run them threw my bead blaster to get the junk off the outside, then chuck them in the lathe and bore the hole to size, If the valve surfaces clean up nice i might consider having them ground and using that face instead of a plate, but i still like the plate idea. Time will tell.

Hello Wendy fans,
I have taken a break from the cylinders and went back to the frame; I had a warp or bend that I could not get out. It was in the center crossmember area, it was pulling the sides out of wake. I took it out and had it in the press several times trying to fix it, but it never resolved the problem. So, I designed a new one that bolts in and touches the journal box slides and holds everything in alignment. My first measurement across the journal box openings from one side to the other in an X was withing .0005 half a thousandth I think that is close enough. If you remember back, I changed the journal box slides from the original design of a 1/2" x 1" flat strip to a U shape more like an English horn design, with these mounted in place the new crossmember is long enough to touch them on all four corners, so when machined parallel and to the proper width it holds everything true and square. Next, I will bolt in two verticals members on the front of the plate and the other to the rear, this uses all but one of the original holes in the frame sides to mount everything, if I had known I was going to do this I would have omitted the one hole, but maybe all just put a bolt in it or mount something there! I have the journal box bearing holes being bored to size by a friend on a cnc mill save me lots of set up time in the four-jaw chuck because I can't bore on my mill. What will take him an hour to do would take me ten. Then I can get the axles done and finish the suspension.
I think that brings me up to date for now

Hi Wendy fans.
I had a busy September and didn't get much done on the Wendy. I did however attend two train meets, but the whole month was just one thing after another. I did get the journal boxes finish and installed the bearings. I am now going to finish the suspension and get the axles and wheels done, I hope to have a rolling chassis by the end of the year but will see.
That's it for now

Hello Wendy fans:
I have not been able to get much done on the Wendy lately, just not much time, as they say, life just gets in the way. I did get the axles machined and had the tread put on the wheels, but that's about it. I hope to finish the wheels next and get a rolling chassis.
But for now, Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

Hello Wendy fans. I know it has been over a year since I posted anything here but it's still alive just stuck in neutral. I had a change in jobs and haven't had a lot of time or money to do much, but things are moving forward on a couple fronts just SLOW. The boiler flues are all welded into the sheets and the whole assembly is ready to be welded into the outer shell.
