I chucked up a piece in a collet turned it to a slide fit the first 0 .25 I had already set my compound to about 0 .33 of a degree .finished the next 1" or so with compound. Then slide the head on taper tap with soft hammer and carefully turn the face. Run the live center up and finish.

Spent a rainy thunderstorm afternoon turning head studs..I need 12 more. Thinking of using locknuts so I will adjust to length at assembly.

Please share where the "Thinking of using locknuts..." comes from? Curious.

Hi Ed,
Was thinking of using locknuts on heads unless someone suggests different. Like the one in picture.

If you were thinking of the nylon locknuts, I'd be suspect of the heat range. In aircraft I've generally seen castled nuts and safety wires. A second nut might be the other idea. I think the caps on many cylinders may be due to hiding or protecting some of these different methods. Or are there high temp locknuts? I've never tried looking for those.

Hi Ken
You are right about the temperature I had not looked it up but I did find steel flex top nuts . Maybe I'm overthinking this, lock washer nut with a drop of thread locker.??

I used no lock washers or lock nuts on the cylinder bolts/nuts of my Allen Ten Wheeler. Just flat washers.
20 years and hundreds of miles later none have come loose, except when I removed them for inspection/servicing.
I even used steam cylinder oil in the threads during assembly so rust would not occur.
Worked fine, all the time.

Jim, of course this brings up the next question: what material are you going to use for the gaskets?

Regarding the heads & chest nuts/bolts, I have found that at/after the first steam up - to go in and retorque all as the gasket material has shrank from the heat. Personally, I have never used lockwashers nor locknuts. Maybe a flat washer in some cases. Yes some low strength Loctite on the stud ends and graphited cyl oil on the nuts to keep the rust out of the threads is a good idea.

Thanks all for the input.
The gasket material that the print calls for is
aramid/ buna n 1/64"
Here is a shot of the head and steam chest studs.

I ordered extra long drill bit for steam passages and won't be here till Monday so loco brakes I have been thinking it will be easier to get that done before the valve gear gets in the way between the frames.
I bought a dykem sponge head bottle thought this will work great.
I have been disappointed every time I used it. I gave it just a little squeeze. Ok maybe a little more than that. This is after mopping it up.
