Terr1bleone...like the way you chronicled your hopper car build. Having open car ends allows the details to be seen (for those that look for that kind of stuff). Brake details specifically. Like the way you simulated pipe clamps for the air lines...very realistic.

One comment though...would think the axle bearings should be pressed on to the axles and mounted so they ride along the center line of the side frame. Don't want the bearing to pop out of the side frame (don't ask how I know). And yes, bearings were the better choice than the bushings.

Lastly, you didn't say how you were going to decorate the car? Color? Road name? Thanx and keep on posting! Carl B.

Thanks Jack!

Carl, I've done all of my trucks like this so far no issues.
Bearings are slight press fit and axles .005 under so they can move laterally slightly. Theres probably only 1/16" of gap between the bearings and the wheel face so the bearing wouldn't even be able to fully pop out. I believe the bearings were 1/2" width.
The car was originally going to be c&o but I've decided to do it nickle plate road instead, a satin black.
Thanks for the compliments on the car

Very nice work. I like all the detail your putting into it. I have a question about the placement of the coupler as to why it is sticking so far out. I have seen this done on other builds and have wondered what is the reason for doing this. I don't think it would cause problems if placed at the prototype location unless your running on very sharp radius.

That was just the minimum stick out for the couplers used. I would have preferred less but wanted to use these couplers.

a little more information on the build before I reveal the finished car.
the kit requires no welding, but I chose to add small welds in discrete areas.

some welds are blended and others left as tacks. many pannels were spot welded together while the car was clecoed to assist in assembly.

it is done after being powder-coated twice.
they always find a way to bend all of the small parts that hang off, but at least they don’t try and fix it. better left to repair at the shop.

I have temporarily decided that it was too murdered out (all black) and needed a splash of something to offset it.
the brown couplers and wheels are simulating rust, im 50/50 between the two looks.
