Next step is to prep boiler shell. (8" x 3/8 steel pipe) , install tube sheets and file welder. Then fab Bill Harris tube expander and expand pipes. Holes are reamed 0.002" - 0.004" larger than pipes. They fit in loose enough to "wobble" the other end an inch or so.

"find welder" - must know how to weld sheets to boiler shell much better than I can!

When you make the fire door weld it in at an angle so you can actually look in and see some of the fire. Years back I built one of those and where the tender sits from memory there's no good way to see into the fire.

re: fire box. This is a "Dry Leg" boiler. The separate fire box (6") is in photo above (July post) The fire box is designed so I can use propane as described above, and I will also fab an ash box as described in book. I am going to cut a 7" dia hole in bed, and use a "drop in plate" that is same size as the firebox id. (8"), and will have a square cut out for ash pan when using coal. This drop in plate will also have provision for the grate. I don't know how long a dry leg fire box will last but I have a second one on the shelf. When using propane, the burners are in the 7" cutout.

For the various fittings, I have found that a "Half coupler" is a good way to go. Available at McMaster Carr for $2.44 ea
1/8 NPT is 5/8 OD, 5/8 long.

Or you can buy regular length schedule 80 couplers and then saw them in half or part them in the lathe. My local hardware and industrial supply store stocks schedule 80 fittings, so it makes it a lot easier for me to do it that way. go with whatever works best for you.
