is one pin that takes a pounding and is tough to lube..hence the self lubricating bushings.

My point is that you SHOULD have tried correcting it without heat, as heat is known to fail. Strange as it may sound, copper alloys work just fine when they're cold, but fail when heated. That's what is meant by hot short.

Hello My Friends
Great progress on the locomotive and your workmanship is top shelf. Delrin AF is tremendous stuff. All the rod bearings on number nine were made of it, and they have never been touched. Just don't oil them. Oil will retain dirt and grit. Run them dry on case hardened crank pins. Copper, most bronze, and brass can be annealed and then worked cold. They will work harden and you will need to re anneal them.
Keep up the fine work.

Can anyone recommend the "fit" or rules of thumb for using Derlin AF in lieu of bronze, i.e. pressed-in interference, etc., as I would expect the I.D. would distort more than traditional materials.

Thank,
Jimmy

Press it in..then finish bore to size.

I put my delrin in the fridge and put a healthy chamfer everywhere.

Did you buy it direct from Allen models?

I would have called them and asked to swap it for a usable casting.

I did buy it from Allen models. I'm not bad mouthing them, it was probably usable , but I thought I'd make it look a little better. Only $12 so not a big loss. I'm just going to make one. I think it'll look better anyway. No big deal. I'm not worried about it. Live and learn.

Did get some work done on the smokebox. I cut the square in the bottom for the exhaust to come through. Also go the hole bored for the smokestack. I cut out some mounts for the light to sit on that will be welded on to the smokebox. I also turned the front cover to fit in the smokebox.

Having fun,
Martin

Drilled some smokebox cover holes today. Do most thread the holes and use a hex head bolt, or just drill and push in a rivet? Is it just a personal preference?

I use fake bolts for all but 6 through bolts that hold the front cover in place.
Studs mounted in the smokebox front just require nuts to hold it in place.
That smokebox cover needs to be easily removable for cleaning and hydro test inspections.

I finally got the time to take the frame all apart and get the brake cylinders mounted.
