I finally broke down and bought some etched brass safety tread from Little Engines. I got some fitted up to the tender front deck. I will use some for the apron also.

I finished the throttle lever and mounted to the back head of the K-36.

Nice work. Can you talk a bit about the standoffs on the boiler? Looks like sheet metal under it. How does it all attach? I can see the weld on the backhead, but how else is it attached? Is the space for insulation?

The standoffs on the boiler is for insulation space, the jacket will cover all of it. I tack welded the spacers at the location where the boiler bands will be located. The back head will have another formed copper sheet on the top half with a 1/4" insulation behind it.

Accurate and scale are lofty goals that are sometimes impossible to obtain. The most notable inaccuracy is the oversize firebox doors. This locomotive has a large firebox and a scale door would make it difficult to keep the fire stoked. This is a Mercer door offered many years ago. I have one on my C-25 and it allows a large scoop of coal to pass through. Thanks for your interest.

More photos of the K-36 back head. Added the upper wrapper and the 1/4" angle separating them.

Is there insulation behind the copper wrapper on the back head or is it for a beautiful decoration? Or does that serve some other purpose?
