More photos of K-36 Build.
I still need to make the cylinder cocks and the back valve head covers but the cylinders are mostly finished.

I presume for running on 4.75" gauge track?
Seeing some of the wonderful work you do, it is sad to think it won't be seen except for a black and grimy shadow in a great loco.

Yes it will run on the 4-3/4" track. But it won't be a small locomotive. This is a project that was started back in the mid 80s. I was building a C-25 in 1.5" and a friend was wanting to build a K-36, well he talked me into making all the patterns for it and get it started which I did. Now I am trying to finish one up for myself. The locomotive is about 3/4 done but still a lot to do. Its a long journey when you're building one from scratch and you don't realize that most of those parts you spend hours making will never be seen. I've always been a narrow gauge fan and the Baldwin built K-36 is a classic modern design (for narrow gauge). I will try to keep everyone informed of the progress.

How common is it for the brake cylinders to be hung off the cylinder saddle? Haven’t seen this before- maybe I just wasn’t noticing?

I’m guessing there’s a fair amount more pattern work in a K36 than a K27?

Any chance of pics of the frames/running gear?

Maybe not more in shear number of patterns but they'll be on average a little bigger for a K36.

Jeff, very interesting to see the two vertical brake cylinders are mounted to the backside of the cylinder castings. Too cool. What parts are you going to tackle next? Main frames?

Jeff, I take it on these outside frame NG engines, the counterweights are probably keyed and quartered very precisely to the axles but the wheels themselves are just pressed on the axles?

Thanks,

Yes these are outside frame locomotives. One of the attractions for me. The counter weights "cranks" are keyed as are the wheels. The only driver with a counter weight is the main drivers, all others are just spoke. The K-36 has a lot more castings than the K-27. The K-36 and K-37 had the same frame and running gear except for the rear frame and trailer truck. The photo shows the main driver center with counter weight added. Everything is finished on the frame, brake rigging, spring rigging, pilot truck and trailer truck. The boiler is finished just need to roll in the flue tubes. The tender is done, but the hand rails. There is still a lot to do though.

Jeff,

thanks for sharing your beautiful craftsmanship.
I hope, there will be a plan book available for that engine in the near future.

Cheers
