Next project:
Building an oil bunker for the tender, based on prototype photos.
The bunker will actually be a tool and battery storage container, all riveted like the original.
The top will remove in two sections, so I can store the center cab roof in there when operating the steamer.
Here's where I'm starting from: Progress photos will follow after they make their way from my phone to my computer. (slow clouds...)

Progress to date on the Oil Bunker storage unit..
It is constructed from 0.060" thick cold rolled steel sheet.
In the background of the second photo you can see the white poster board model I made to test the measurements of the pieces.
I also have the top covers cut and fit. They now will get rivet detail, other details, cleaning, primer painting, and final black painting.
We've got rain and snow coming for several days, so it is a good time to work in my Shop.
Although the painting is best done in warmer dryer weather. I'll be patient...

It is not a totally scale construction. I am going for functionality and stand-off scale. Only a tiny few people will ever recognize that.
Otherwise I would use rivets half the size, and at least three time as many. Not to mention all the tiny busted drills that would result!
Anyone who complains will be happily invited to make me a "more correct" oil bunker. For a propane-fired locomotive... ((-;

Final gloss coat is drying on one side of each piece.

I kind of like the larger rivets and larger spacing. Seems like it gives it a more realistic look. Now perfect scaling is fine as well, super detailed modeling is certainly an art form! But your tender looks like it’s just ready to high ball down the tracks into the night.

I'm happy with how the oil bunker project is shaping up. It should work as designed, and produce the desired visual effect.
Now if the 3 more days of snain forecast(!) will just warm up, I can get the final painting done! White roofs again this morning.
Weird weather along with all the other weird stuff going on.
Fortunately the finish paint job can look a bit cruddy. It's just a heavy oil tank... goobers all over the top by the filler...
Everyone stay safe and get lots of guilt-free work accomplished in your Shops!
That's one of the unforeseen results of this social distancing: Spectacular new locomotives and cars appearing at your local tracks, later this year.

Nice work and continous progress! Just the right time for working at our hobby - far from others and Corona !
You're right so far: Bringing a projekt from scratch onto the rails some time should be as important as working at those 1000s of details , we are loving, too!

Here are some fresh pics of the completed Oil Bunker.
The top removes in two sections for internal access. The removable cab roof center section fits inside the rear part of the bunker, and the deep forward section holds tools, lube, battery and whatever else. (No Rule G infractions, please...)
I'm pleased with the results and look forward to using it. It was copied from photos and measurements I took of Rayonier #90 at Garibaldi, OR.

Yes, lots of work, but a locomotive is not complete without a tender, unless it's a tank loco.
May as well put some good energy into building the tenders too.

Well: One more item to make and I can call this locomotive substantially completed.
(Except for the raised operator's seat above the tender tanks.)
I wanted to replicate the smoke stack spark arrestor fabricated by Rayonier Logging Co. later in my locomotive's life.
They equipped all of their steam locomotives with these.
Here's #90 wearing her's in the mid-1950s:
And here is my finished Mikado, complete with hat.
It's been a long building road, and I'm pleased with the final locomotive.
Now it just needs to be RUN!
