Kind of strange looking back from our viewpoint that acetylene was used for lighting.

I heard that the reason the bottles are called A & B sizes is that A is for Auto and B is for Bus.

Steve,

I never have heard the Auto and Bus theory before..

But you never know.. I will keep my ears open for that info.

I do remember as a very young boy, my grand parents still

had the fancy wrought iron Acetylene lamp fixtures with

beveled glass windows in them, on the wall's in all the rooms

in there home. They had the gas pipe capped off, so they could

not be used, but they looked really cool. 8)

In the late 1930's I remember my aunt and uncles place in Kansas still had the outlets as well as the acetylene generator in the basement. My uncle and cousins hauled it out and disposed of it out in one of the fields.

I also remember auto and welding shops used acetylene generators well into the 1950's. I remember dad cleaning out the white sludge, refilling with fresh water and filling the hopper with calcium carbide.

I think there is (or was) a "M" size tank used on motorcycles.

I played with some calcium carbide with my Uncle when I was 12, 13, 14 or somewhere in there. It was fun to place a drop of water on a chip of calcium carbide and light the resulting gas with a striker! I wouldn't recommend it though...

Ha! Bunch of Marys! Get and MT Gallon Paint can with the sealing lid and poke a small hole in the bottom rim, 16P nail size. Place a coupla smal pieces of Calcium carbide in the MT paint can and add a splash of water from a restaurant catsup squirter. Stomp the lid on, put your foot on the can and lite the gas coming out. If you were fast enough, you were rewarded with a resounding BANG and the lid flying several feet. Too slow, and you had a very large miners lamp.

Wanna go for broke? Put a few kernals of CC in a trash can lid, (smash the top handle if necesary to level the lid) and put the can on it upside down. Add the water, and with a stick and a burning rag tipped on it, ignite the gas at the base. THAT'LL BLOW YOUR HAIR BACK!

(Previous actions as described, should not be attempted, although I survived.)

It is True that the small acetylene Bottles originated with gas headlamps for Automobiles and Buses before the inception of electric lights. Gas lamps were considered an improvement over oil wicked buggy lamps.

My Dad's school had gas lights, and a gererator tank outside. It was considered a lark to be assigned to pump out the sludgey water when its recharge was needed. the tank was sealed concrete and constructed so that the water level not only presurized teh gas, but regulated the generation by altering the water level for the Carbide hopper. Electrification in the 20's ended the need. They installed 25 cycle lighting around this area early on. The electrification of the bustling Gary area with its Steel and Oil industry has an interesting history. Look up Gary Railways, where my Fathers Father worked. My Other Grandfather worked at Carnegie Steel works, that became US Steel.

I still have a carbide miner's light that belonged to my father. I played with it quite a bit as a kid.

Can you even by calcium carbide anymore?

Government regs are making it difficult, needless to say. It used to be readily available, but can still be procured, as it's used in other industries for other purposes. One of them is in converting cupola melted gray iron to ductile iron, where it is used to lower sulfur content. The calcium carbide absorbs sulfur, and is then skimmed from the molten iron. Excess sulfur prevents the conversion.

miners carbide is available in any mining store in up to i believe 25 lb cans. ebay sellers usually sell it 1 pound can
and of course gas manafactures use it by the railcar load.

many early vehicles used gas generators for lighting before tanks became common. taking a ride sure took a lot of tinkering around.
