Thanks Mike, yes, ive also always liked the look of the Ottaways. This one has been around the Seattle area for 50 years or so, but went underground back in the early 70’s and didn’t surface until I bought it two years ago. Sort of a barn find, but surprisingly, known to the local steam boat fleet and unknown to the live steam RR bunch.

I am certainly interested in pursuing a modern paint formula for the original Baldwin green. Not sure if the powder code vendors can work with paint codes, or simply match by eye to an existing sample. Apparently it is possible to submit a Benjamin Moore or Sherman Williams metal exterior paint sample to obtain a Baldwin green powder coating formula. That way it could be available for use either way.

Ian Wallis just sent out a holiday card with what looks like another possible example of what looks like your paint sample, used on a new build on the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in North Devon, UK. The photo was taken by Ian’s friend John Pigott.

Does anyone know (Mike??) if traditional Baldwin green - described earlier in this thread- is distinctly different, or similar hue, to Brunswick Green Locomotive paint?

Iam at the point of choosing paint for my 4” scale BN center cab restore. I plan on using their orange/Dark green current color scheme. However, can’t pin what greenish black formulation they use...

Is it close same as PRR Brunswick, Baldin green, or something entirely different?

Baldwin green is VERY different from the PRR’s “green” paint, which by the way is NOT Brunswick green! On the PRR it was Dark Green Locomotive Enamel or DGLE. It was mostly black paint to which some chrome yellow was added. It only appeared to be a shade of green wen the sun was at certain angles. Baldwin green is actually an olive green color. You should be able to get the paint codes for Baldwin Green from the Steamtown National Park as they restored the Baldwin Shop Switcher and did major research to get the color correct.

I'm of the understanding that the olive green Steamtown painted 26 is not Baldwin Green, it's too light of a shade. True Baldwin green is darker and subtler, the domes painted on the previous page are a much better match.

Steamtown did a lot of research to get the color correct. However….even if it is a shade too light, it is still a gradation of olive green, where the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Dark Green Locomotive enamel is entirely different and it has no brown component.

As FYI, Here is a current on line supplier of high quality acrylic, urethane, and lacquer paints. Their British Racing Green (BRG) isn’t as dark as Baldwin Green, but is interesting for being a deep, but not black green. Thinking this might be a candidate for the Orange and Dark Green two color scheme initially introduced by Great Northern, now employee by BNSF.
