Looking for info on a Burke

Post by VelocityDuck »

I Found a Burke MV down near Tampa.

But damn! It looks rough. Ad says "Millwright in decent condition It needs some love. $1200 or best offer no reasonable offer refused."

$1,200 seems kind of high considering the pictures.

Does anyone know how much work is involved to remove the head?

With mills like that the head usually come off when you remove the 4 bolts between the head and ram. Keep in mind you get all the weight of the head as soon as you pull it off the post in the center of the ram.

Im working on a grizzly that spent a couple years in the weather. It was no where as rough as the one in the pictures... That millrite is going to be a lot of work.... Experience tells me there is a reason the screw is sticking out from underneath the table...

If you are looking for a mill in the tampa area craigslist has a Fray in much better condition with a vise and what could be a quick change with collets. It might even have a some other tooling....

You NEED an overhead chain fall or whatever to get the head off. They are very heavy, awkward, unbalanced and dangerous.

.when moving the mill, the heads are generally tipped over and the mill carried as one piece.

Considering what I see in the picture, I would be worried about the ways and table condition and as mentioned there is a reason why the leads screw is out.

Were it me I would consider it a boat anchor.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Heh! Not a very good one, either. Interestingly, it appears that the machine has spent some time submerged. Could be wrong.
Plain and simple. That machine is junk. Stay away unless you have a desire to learn how to scrape machine tools and have exceedingly deep pockets.

I had a Fray for a number of years, a model 7 with both horizontal and vertical axis, it had a 30 MT taper. Could do almost anything once you got all of the angles set. It was bit small for the jobs I had but frequently by using both upper and lower X and Y axis, I could get there.

Take a look at Facebook Market Place. I'm not a Facebook fan but there is a fair amount of equipment listed. Even a Deckel but they want $15K for that one.

I've been checking Facebook MarketPlace. And I saw the Alliant. But that looks to have the same footprint as a Bridgeport. And I just don't have the space. I've seen a few (what I call) full size mills not too far from here.

And Houma, LA is a 6 hour drive. Which means I'm driving 6 hours pulling a trailer only to find out it's worn out, the motor is shot or a number of things that would make it a no-go. And then another 6 hours back.

Such are the trials and tribulations of living in the Redneck Riviera.

I have an Alliant and I love it, but it is the same size as a Bridgeport.
