Re: Ring light
I have made ring light for my mill, see:
http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/ring-light.html
The final version I am fully satisfied with and it gives very little shadowing.

Re: Ring light
And I got mine today. They work very well.
Re: Ring light
Not on the mill but I needed a light on my new saw so I grabbed one of the extras I bought and it worked great!

Re: Ring light
I would end up cutting the light off...
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Re: Ring light
On newer cutoff saws (for wood anyway), they have a laser line that marks the cut.
Seems brilliant to me, and I've always wanted one.

Re: Ring light
I'm not a big fan of the laser lines. They don't seem to be very precise. I can scribe a line to cut to and then line it up with the edge of the blade better than the laser can.
Re: Ring light
Agree 100%. The laser line is too fat to use as a cut marker and the edges are too fuzzy to try and use then as accurate cut alignment. I still use a square mark a line and then move the wood until the most set tooth aligns with the line. When working where the lighting is bad the laser does illuminate the line and the tip of the tooth. My saw is a 10" sliding Mikita and it's possible that another saw brand that I've not used has suitable laser alignment lens.
Re: Ring light
Tom's experience mirrors mine. To add to the problem, the laser on my sliding saw works if or when it feels like it. I have not been successful in determining why.

Re: Ring light
The one I saw was a Festool; as I recall, the line was very sharp.
But it was a while ago, maybe the sharp line is only in my fuzzy mind.
Festool stuff is top class, and the prices are beyond my class these days.

Re: Ring light
You've inspired me;
I got 2 of these 15W LED worklights for 5 Euros each, and some of these magnetic base parts bowls for 2 euros each.
a couple of rivets, and I have a magnetic base worklight.
The magnet is pretty good and my workshop is a bare steel container, so this is a handy thing.
