There will be run caps. Here is a link to the set up I am using.

I am not sure if it is a good system but it looks like it will work for me on paper.

I have yet to go looking for run capacitors yet and not knowing how large they will be, may end up adding another enclosure to put them in.

I also have not added the second fuse block that will hold the fuses for the lathe motor.

I am looking for a supply of used run capacitors right now and hookng up the main wiring. I have to travel for a month or so. Looks like it will be June or July before I am up and running.

Pipescs,
I got my run Caps from a scrap yard that scraps out motors, they sold them to me for 25¢ ea. To test them I short out the 2 terminals with a screw driver then put a ohm meter across the 2 terminals; if the needle spikes over then slowly returns to 0 I consider it good. Also, you probably know this but be sure they are rated for 220 V or better, higher is better. :D

Off to California for three weeks with the job. Hope to crank it up when I get back.

All is good in the Pipes House

Came home from California to hook up the three phase power and tonight fired off the lathe for the first time. All is good. Speed control works and she runs much quieter than I expected. I believe it helps having the idler inside the base.

Still have to tweek the speed read out pot and put in the balance run capacitors

Off to New York for ten days and then home to go pick up a Bridgeport and Jet lathe from a local hobbiest. The Bridgeport is a nineteen seventy four model and in good shape. Trouble is for the three thousand I had to pay for it I also had to take a Jet 13x40 gap bed lathe in the deal as he would not split them. Now I have to find a buyer for that.

Well I said I was going to not go thru this much work again and find me a new china knock off milling machine.

So much for that. The dog drug these up from a shop in Elgin Alabama. Trouble was I had to buy them both to get the Mill.

I will offer the Jet Lathe up on Craigs list here localy and hopefully off load it.

So once again Levi and I will dig in. I should not have paid him last time as he is asking for more money on this project

Looking for parts.

Now that I am actually using the this lathe I am finding the bent cross slide lead screw to be more trouble than I need.

I am looking for anyone that may carry used parts for the assembly. (At Less than SB prices)

Charlie,

Google "How to straighten acme screws" or "lead screws". I watched a Youtube video of a fellow straightening prop shafts for commercial fishing boats with I think just V blocks and a press. Also, you can buy acme screws from MSC and I am sure other dealers. You may have to do some final machining but you may be able to do that on the lathe as is.

Thanks for the link.

My problem runs deeper though. At some point in the live of this lathe it was tipped over or hit by something like a forklift on the apron area.

the indicator ring or mount is also bent causing a binding as you turn the handle.. While it works it is distracting

As to straightening I may end up going that route but my biggest headache is that it involves more than just the screw. The screw has been repaired also in the past
