Show us your lathe!
Re: Show us your lathe!
I finally found me a Nice 13"x 30" LeBlond Regal lathe. I had been looking for a bigger lathe for a while to replace my 10" Atlas and stumbled upon this from a machinery dealer in California. LeBlond sold it new to Hoffman & Heartt in Los Angeles on 3/22/1960 and it later ended up at Universal Studios. It is well equipped, came with a 5C Collet Chuck, 6 Jaw Buck Chuck, 8" 4-Jaw, 6" 3-Jaw, 13" Face Plate, drive plate, Steady Rest, and thread chasing dial. It has a 2 HP 3 phase motor, so I also bought a 7.5 HP Rotary Phase Converter, the biggest I could run in my shop, to run the lathe and hopefully a larger Bridgeport Knee Mill in the future. My patience finally paid off. I found a lot of 17" and 19" LeBlond's but they all had 7.5 or 10hp motors on them and were bigger than what I really needed. This is a perfect little lathe for my shop. My Atlas is for sale if anyone is interested.

Beautiful!
Congratulations.
Congratulations.

Great score! LeBlond built very robust and functional lathes. Looks to be in quite good condition.

Just a little Grizzly G9972Z, 11"x26". The cabinet base is made from 1.75" thick engineered beam ripped down to 3.5" wide and it has 8 levelers to keep things solid. The floor was not leveled well in that corner. I leveled the base before adding the cabinet carcass and marked the locations of the corners so it could be set back in the same place after placing the lathe on it. The 21 drawers are all on ball bearing slides.

Congratulations! She was built about 1/2 mile from my home and should give you many more years of life!
By 1960, it probably is capable of cutting metricgears?

Re: Show us your lathe!
Nice find. I have been looking at a LeBlond Regal with a servo shift. Its 15 X 50. It has an electrical problem and won't engage in speeds over 500RPM. Also I need to build a shop to put the machines in. I already have a Model 16 Pratt & Whittney lathe. It will swing about 18 1/2 inches. with 30 inch centers. It is way beefer than the LeBlond is, but I still want the LeBlond too.

Re: Show us your lathe!
The Servo Shift models are known for having issues. The earlier Regals are reportedly more reliable.
That said, electrical issues on a LeBlond shouldn't require major surgery. And the folks at LeBlond are helpful (even if their parts are outrageous!)

Repowering an 82-year old lathe
I bought and installed a new 1/3 HP Baldor-Reliance capacitor-start AC motor. I also replaced the pulley because the shaft for the 1/3 HP motor is larger than that for the 1/4 HP motor that died. Also replaced was the V-belt.
The question for the day is: Should I also replace the leather drive belt, and if so, with what? (I have no complaints with the leather belt.)
Thanks for any replies.
Regards,
Andy
