Jet 1236 lathe

Post by Dan2006 »

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm in high school and have a chance to get a free lathe from my aunt, my uncle passed away. It is a Jet 1236P belt drive but the motor is missing and it needs a tool post. I know that it is old, or should I find something find something else? I'm taking a machine shop class in school.

I can take some pictures, and I'm trying to find someone to come over and look at it with me also.

Welcome:

old is not necessarily bad -> but old and 'beat' is another story.

before anyone can help:

pictures will be a plus

where in the world is 'come over' located? -> seems like you are a native English speaker and probably from North America....but beyond that...???

Yes sir I'm in North America, California to be exact. Sorry, what I meant was my uncle has a couple of friends that have lathes and mills, and i was hoping I could get them to stop by sometime and take a look at this lathe with me.

I'm headed over to my Aunts house to take some pictures and post them on here.

Also, I thank you for replying to my post.

Actually, the Jet 12X36 lathe is really a decent lathe for its size. I wouldn't be afraid of it. But condition is everything. I often see these rusted up from neglect and not having been used enough to be worn out. A lot of model engines are made with these lathes. Usually they have a 1 9/16 spindle bore which would allow the use of a lever action 5C collet closer. The ways are hardened and ground on the ones that I have seen. Usually on the tailstock end is a tag telling you that.

BIGGEST problem I have seen with them is 'soft' cross slides and compounds - where the dovetails do not fit correctly and give erratic OD / FACE positions and / or allow the tool to wander up / down under load (which causes the same).

I have one with just such a problem....unfortunately.

I took those pictures in a hurry, sorry. I will clean the area out tonight and take a few more pictures. I found a 4 jaw chuck, and a face plate, it's probably 8 inches in diameter. I didn't notice hardly any rust, but the oil on the machine looks like it turned to light grease.

Sorry I was wrong, there is rust, but it seems to be light rust. Which probably is not good.

Hopefully I can get it running without to much expense. I'm taking machining classes at school, and maybe this lathe would be a good enough lathe for me to get more machining time at home also. I'm in a fairly large class at school so we all share machines.

At least your school has machines...

Do not worry about a light coat of rust...many lathes have survived worse.

Do NOT clean the rust from the machine with emery cloth.

I leave it up to you to learn how you should do it.

Okay, that sounds fair, as I need to learn. Probably emery cloth would scratch the surface enough to create a better place for rust.

But I might need help with a motor. I did find the original 2 pulley that goes on the motor end. But I'm sure it's going to be metric. If someone has done a motor replacement, would you mind giving me the make, model. I have been reading some older posts, but I can't seem to find the make and of the replacement motor. It has a make shift stand. If I can get the lathe to run so I can make some (chips) as I have read on here. Then in my welding shop class I'll make a nice heavy stand.

Thanks everyone.

As I remember I seen a post about frame sizes, so I can go back and look that up. What about HP/RPM for selecting a motor? If RPM changes to much the speeds will change. I think around a 1 1/2 - 2hp motor?
