Champion Tool Works 12" Lathe - Carriage Auto Feed

Post by drudel »

Hi, I just acquired a Champion Tool Works 12" Lathe from early 1900.
I do not have any documentation on usage, nor have I been able to find any.
I DO have the auto feed working for the cross slide, and I can start it, stop it, and change its directions.
I can't figure out how to get the autofeed working for the Carriage itself.
Does anyone have experience or instructions for this model?
I am including a picture of the full Lathe and a close up of the Carriage Controls

Appreciate the help, this is my first Post.

There should be a lever, typically about in the place of the one marked deactivated, that should switch the auto feed function from carriage to cross slide. You may need to look inside the carriage and see if there are any parts obviously missing, and try to figure out what the previous owner(s) did.

Thanks Russ, I will take a closer look. Perhaps that lever got bumped during transport and is stuck in the cross slide position.

Hi Russ, I investigated that lever more carefully, and it was just very tight, however, it is used to disengage the manual Carriage feed entirely but does not allow for any auto feed.

Would you have any other ideas?
Thanks,

You sure that lever does not have 3 positions ? Neutral in center, slide one way cross the other that is the way those are usually set up. some lathes however did not have power cross feed.

Doesn't look like it, at the extreme, the power cross feed still operates.

Well with a antique machine like that anything is possible. Atlas/Craftsman lathes , some had power crossfeeds but, all used the half nuts for slide feed. Your lathe may work the same.

does that lower left hand lever move through 180 degrees? how much travel does it have?
I found a photo of another 12 inch lathe showing the lever 180 degrees from the one in your photo. Maybe something is stuck in the apron.
