Sometimes a man got to do what hr got to do (Parting)

Post by tornitore45 »

I bought a DOM pipe 7.25 OD 0.5 Wall 4" Long for both tires of the model tractor that is my new project
Too cheap to pay $5 for the cut, but not smart enough to figure the extra inch I bought for kerf and holding actually costed more I am now into the predicament to part off 2 pieces 1.5" long

Problem is I have a 9" Chinese lathe. The pipe does not fit under the saddle and the cross slide does not come out far enough fro a conventional parting tool.

So I went half way from the inside with a boring bar and a thin grooving tool, then turned around the QCTP with boring bar on my side, flipped bar and tool and went is from the outside.
The picture shows the ring as it sit after parting. The boring bar is re-positioned for the 2nd tire to be cut.

Nice solution. Have to keep that one in my back pocket for when the need comes up.

You have some sort of tape, rubber band or strap around it to keep it under control when it breaks loose?

As whateg0 said to keep from singing like a bell

Used to work in a roundhouse where they turned the wheels on the engine. You had to wear ear protection within a half mile radius, it was crazy. Never mind the dude dressed in the “bomb suit” running the carriage.
