Need help finding Change gears - JET GH-1340

Post by MotoWerx »

Hello all, I am hoping to find some help or be pointed in the right direction. I have been looking for the change gears for a 1989 Jet GH1340 Lathe I acquired last year. Oddly enough, it was owned by a former Jet Tools sales rep here in Tacoma Washington but he didn't have the change gears. (long story but I bought his machining tools from his estate auction after he passed. I bought it all from his widow after he passed, I never met him) Unit had sat for 15+ years covered in cosmoline. (it is used though)

Was hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have been looking at newer Jet lathes and their gears but cannot find the right gears, I am trying to cross reference but have had no success. Many google searches and sleuthing also to no avail.

Anyway, here is is what I need:

(This is from the back of my instruction/parts manual)

# 33-6013-00, Gear (M1.25x28T)
# 33-6015-00, Gear (M1.25x35T)
# 33-6016-00, Gear (M1.25x36T)
# 33-6017-00, Gear (M1.25x50T)
# 33-6018-00, Gear (M1.25x55T)
# 33-6022-00, Gear (M1.25x157T)

If you have any of these and are willing to sell or if you know of a source to get them, let me know.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

(I posted this in the classifieds as well but was hoping for some more traction here)

That design, like many others, appears to be similar to models from Enco, Grizzly, Birmingham, and probably others. You might broaden your search to check those other manufacturers.

all from the same cottage industry Taiwan factories.

I have these gears, but they are in use.

My machine is a 'Select' from the 1980's

willing to bet you can get them from Grizzly if willing to $$$ the price.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Have been looking at Grizzly but can not find the right model lathe to get the proper part #'s from.

Are you sure you don't want to part with yours? :D

i would not worry about the model...most all of them will have the same change gears.

I would just call Grizzly and ask for 'parts' and hit them with the sizes. You might have to talk to more than one person...

if you want the entire lathe, you can have the gears...is no use to me without them...

I needed a change gear for my orphan Czech Zelenda lathe; I figured out the pitch and bought it from a gear specialty shop, it was around $6 + shipping.
I had to cut it thinner, boor the center, and [gasp!] file a keyway.

My change gears are metric, I assume yours are imperial, but gears are available and not expensive when their not spare parts prepared for a specific machine.

Page 92 in that manual lists the change gears. They aren't all the same, and there's no mention of pitch. But the tools are all metric, so might be the same module. Might find some that work. You could also buy a gear cutter and make some gears, if you are so inclined.

Hop on your motorcycle and enjoy a ride to Bellingham to visit Grizzly in person!
But not this weekend. Your weather is supposed to be wild and wet.

The gears in a truck transmission have to be steel and good quality to be quiet and transmit the required torque. The change gears on a lathe don't have that much torque stress on them so they don't need to be so strong. Find someone with a 3D printer and make them from PLA. They may not last as long as steel but can be cheap enough to be replaced as needed. Gears are quite easy to design in CAD and the file sent to the printer.

I am willing to wager that you can purchase stock gears cheaper than printing them
