Atlas th48

Post by Atlaslathe »

Hello. First time on the forum. I just got my first lathe, it's an atlas th48. Been watching a lot of videos, but really what I'm looking to identify everything that came with the lathe.

You got a lot of good attachments for that lathe. That is a real find. I don't know where to begin. certain things like the Jacobs headstock chuck and the whole tailstock turret assembly , so many things.

First picture is a lever style collet closer, don't see any collets however. With the Atlas ' small bore headstock collets size range is very limited, great if you do TINY work not so much otherwise. Last picture is a tool post grinder ,can't make out the brand.

You have pretty much everything that Sears sold with that lathe. I have most of that stuff too.

Too much to tell you what everything is, but if you look in a catalog, you can match things up with the pictures:

Looking at the bottom of the tool post grinder, I see rust where it shouldn't be. Somebody went thru a bad time years ago. I hope it can be useful again. Only distracting myself from the ongoing plague.

So I have a ton of collets. All the empty holes in the picture are where the collets go, there they only thing that has a but of rust so in working in cleaning them. The grinder is a Atlas. I was suggested but to use it that it's very dangerous but I'm no where near that point yet.

You can find a lot of documentation on vintagemachinery.org.

The previous owner did things which must be appreciated. The iron legs and underneath custom cabinet (as ballast, while pure sense) support the bed and tie it down.. Well.. Please go thru a procedure of the operations before applying power. You just grip a belt and see things rotating and what is going to happen. It is going to happen really quick and those gears are impossibly expensive.

Cool thanks, ya it's setup nicely, unfortunately it was in storage for a short time and has some rust on some of the accessories that I need to figure out how to get cleaned up

Most likely it is a Dumore and larger than the "Tom Thumb". It has brushes and commutator so they "breath". Before Scraping or wire brushing the rust, wrap tape around the open areas and the motor shaft. These have really precision bearings. Unloaded rpms are around 10,000 so even though it exhales a lot of grit, it cannot inhale it.
