You may want to see what dropros.com offers.

They have units with magnetic scale that can be cut to length and fit in tight spaces.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

If you want to play with electronics and get a decent dro then look at touch dro

You can buy igauging scales or even cheap glass scales on Amazon. And buy the transmitter or roll your own.

The screen is any android phone or tablet easy to source second hand

Also, DRO Pros has some good videos that go into quite a bit of detail on installing a DRO, especially mounting the scales. Only thing is that lathe in their videos is probably one heck of a lot cleaner than our lathes. :D

Nah ..I cleaned most of the chips from mine before the pictures were taken
Too many things going on to bother listing them.
