Info on Perkins spring coiler?

Post by Frank_Dorion »

I just came up with a Perkins spring coiler in very nice condition and would like to locate operating instructions for it. It was made by Perkins Machine and Gear Company in West Springfield, MA. This version is a bench-mounted manually-operated unit with overall dimensions about the size of a shoebox. It forms the spring coil by using a pair of drive rollers to push the wire against a shaped pin. Apparently, the way the wire hits against the pin determines the pitch and the diameter of the resulting coil. It is heavily built, and, according to the information stamped on the set of rollers that came with it, it will coil wire from .011" to .125" in diameter. Although I think I've figured out the basic principle of operation, there are several adjusting mechanisms which are a mystery to me at the moment. Any help on figuring out this machine would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Frank,

Maybe this site will help answer some questions.

It is about how to make springs.

I think they've likely got it figured out in the intervening 17 years...

We'll never know, as Frank hasn't made a showing on the board since 2003.
Very nice gesture by David to make the offer, though.

Absolutely. Someone else may find that offer by searching in the near future.
