I sent a message to the seller of the used Rohm 16mm chuck.
He's in Germany; if he won't post it to Portugal, then I'll have to go for the Amazon Chinese.

I can't seem to find serious keyed chucks at all over here.

The few tools I've ordered from China have actually been very good; I suspect that today's manufacturing techniques make reasonably accurate items cheap.
If that happens I'll measure the runout and let you all know the result.

Question:

16 mm chuck: what is the minimum size but that it will hold?

I have some larger chucks that have minimum bit size of maybe 4mm..which is the cause of my having many sizes
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Supposed to be 3mm.
I do use smaller bits, but not often.
And I have another chuck; I want 1 for the lathe, 1 for the drill press, and 1 for the mill.
Drill press and lathe are interchangeable (MT2) but it's a handicap to have to share one between the machines.
I think I'll usually put this one in the drill.

The guy with the Rohm wanted just bit too much postage... now someone else bought it.

It could be time to cast my eyes to the east again. I'll wait a little and see what else turns up.
It occurs to me that drills are not accurate tools anyway.

Just went through this debate myself. The first choice was a nice ball bearing chuck of a recognized manufacturer. After looking at “the bay” for a while at used chucks, the price of a new South Bend chuck and mandrel looked more appealing. It’s not the South Bend of old but they were new parts with a warranty. The previous owner of my lathe used the same chuck and was happy with it. So far it hasn’t disappointed me.

I have South Bend keyless chucks for both my lathe and mill. Purchased from Grizzly.
They have performed perfectly in service for several years and I am quite pleased with them.

Golden Goose brand from China are quite good. Funny thing is they use a Pellican as a logo !!

I had what I assume was a Chinese keyless chuck on my Powermatic drill press. It would self tighten to the point of me needing to use two pairs of channel locks to get it loose.

I now have a 5/8 Albrecht and the difference is night and day.

Just let go of it, it will eventually unplug itself.

That's far too simplistic.
Asian manufacturers can make decent products, but with no name recognition it's a race to the bottom.

There are some mid priced alternatives; Baer and Paulimot are German companies, I assume the actual goods are Asian imports because they don't state otherwise.
The difference is quality control. When a company puts their name on a product, there is an incentive to be good.
If I was making money from my tools, the situation would be different.

I'm being stopped by excessive postage costs to Portugal.
I still have 2 good drill chucks for my 3 machines so there's no real hurry.

I found a deal on Amazon Spain; 16mm keyless noname Chinese special.
it was 45 euros with B18 cone (including a B18- MT2 adaptor) or 23 Euros with a JT3 cone (and mt adaptor).
With free delivery to Portugal.

So I ordered the $25 chuck.
I can still use my Rhom for the mill with the ISO 40 adaptor I have.

When I get it I'll check the runout and let you know.
But only time and actual use will reveal the truth!

At least the low price makes it a better gamble.
'Hopefully a good find.
