The other method for pulling the lettering off would be what is commonly called "grave rubbing".

You put a piece of paper on top and rub with the side of a pencil and it marks the high spots but not the lows. You then get a negative image, like the Shroud of Turin.

Looks like it's in good condition, but take Rich's comments to heart and check it.

Let me think on that. Maybe not the best choice but I may have considered this block to be my reference. I've tried making a cylinder square and compare with a few other squares. It seems like I'm in the few thousandths of noise not knowing which one is correct, and I'm sure I don't make perfect measurements. Now watch, I'll be looking at a granite square reference.

A cylindrical square made on a lathe is extremely accurate, assuming you turn it straight. If it is, and you've faced it properly, it has to be a true 90° angle when placed on the faced end.

I checked my cylinder square and note slightly less than 0.0002" deviation around the circumference. It's tight there and maybe my indicator is a bit floppy.

I determine a mid point and mark the top for a zero, then measure 4 points around and they are all 0. Then again and one is a tenth out. Then I'll bump the ball too hard and it's all out half a thou.
