Re: Get Material Flat in Vise

SO here are some thoughts to ponder about holding work in the vise
Here is a tough part to hold square, but you can see some of the principles at work
Now you can't hold all 6 because you want to machine the top surface in the mill, but holding it properly gives you
a better chance at success.

Now lets look at when it is clamped using a "V" Block
Note the block is not against the solid jaw because the casting is not square
Also the bottom of the V Block is not flush with the Vise Ways

So now we address the problem by adding a single point and note the plane of the solid jaw is flush with the V Block,
and the single point is opposite that plane, giving a solid mounting

besides knowing 3,2,1 , having support materials is very important for seetups !
Number 1 is the very favorite choice of material for Old timers . Ordinary Emery cloth, and the grit was placed against the casting for rough work and reversed and placed against the jaws for finish work.
Number 2 is hardwood placed against uneven surfaces , and is in sheet, strip or block form depending on the application
Number 3 is low melting alloy( 158 F) which give great support for uneven parts and the alloy can be poured on the part in the vise !
Number 4 is a newer item, Hot Melt glue for delicate part holding
Not shown but important is a dowel pin or small round bar for single point application and a really good form also not shown
is a 1/2 round dowel or rod as that adds even more support or stability

Hope this helps you understand and gain on your challenge
using this knowledge will help overcome the deficiencies of a cheap or inaccurate vise , but as many have said , having a KURT is a quick way
to better performance . - Last word.. If it looks like a KURT , does not mean you will get Kurt Quality ! so beware of imposters.
