Vintage Chainsaw

Post by armscor 1 »

My Brother has finally sourced a drive belt for his chainsaw,.534" pitch toothed belt, interestingly a drive belt for a Bridgeport J Head.

Very few companies design around custom belt sizes.

It is always easier to work with something "off the shelf"
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Please share more about the chainsaw. Interesting!
I have a 1950s Stihl made in Germany before they set up production in New Jersey (I think.)
It Stihl runs...

The Chainsaw is a 1957 Homelite, chrome bore with 3 piston rings in excellent condition.
Homelite started making portable generators in 1937 and then made the first I believe electric chainsaw which could be driven from their generator, way ahead of the times.
He recently restored an old Mccullock gear drive chainsaw with a flogged out big end, rehoned the bore on a sunnen hone and sized it to suit the needles of a standard off the shelf needle bearing, had to grind the needles to length.
Running again.
He has more than a hundred restored chainsaws!

Thanks for that info.
Chainsaw collecting can be dangerous. Sort of like steam locomotives...

The difference is that vintage chainsaws can actually do some useful work!
