I have an old Myers well pump that I wish to cleanup and paint. I want to blast it to remove some old paint and a bit of rust, and I wondered what media would work best.
Thanks.

Re: Blasting cast iron
I like the course silica sand for that, but you have to have the right PPE to protect you from the dust.

Re: Blasting cast iron
I have done some blasting of paint off various cast iron and cast steel (bits of transmissions and engines) and used aluminum oxide grit. It digs deep into the existing paint and produces a fine scuff pattern on the material that the new paint readily locks onto. But you want to protect gasket surfaces unless you intend to resurface them.

Thanks, gentlemen! No gasket surfaces are involved.
