The blade has to be bolstered for one direction. Longer blades are twisted around and become inverted for shipment.
It wasn't always this way. Bidirectional blades were the rule for all manners of cutting. The shapes of the bidirectional blades were repeated for use in other stylistic ways. Everyone wasn't a "Smith" but had an eye for teeth and curves which had to happen. That made for joining them and that made for different arcs by different methods.
