First thing that came to mind was it's make a really expensive waste basket !
That is one SERIOUSLY sized collet, is it a ER 600 ? ;)

It isn't the collet that is big, it's the calliper that is miniature. ;)

I'm not even sure if it's a work holding or tool holding ( both ? ) collet,
the big question is ( pun intended ) what's the collet nut and wrench look like !

If I had to guess it's probably not for a machine tool at all. Used as a quick attach / removal on fairly high maintenance precision shaft drive maybe?

Note that none of the slots go thru to the bottom alternately like the ER series. This is probably not a collet.

Not all collets are slotted from both ends. In fact, most are not. I offer you the two most common, the R8 and the 5C, both of which are single taper collets. Collets that are slotted from each end are double taper collets, of necessity.

The collet shown appears to be a single taper.
