I got myself some lanolin and a spray bottle. Now I need a solvent. I am waffling between kerosene and mineral spirits. Which will do the least damage to paint?

I was planning on boiling some ATF, bit of kero, and bee wax - use a pump up garden sprayer...

I am Googling around, and people are saying mineral spirits will only damage fresh paint, whereas kerosene may be more problematic.

Think maybe I'll add a touch of motor oil; lanolin all by itself is waxy.

Re: What is a good rust preventative for machine storage.
I got myself a pound of lanolin from Ebay, supposedly. Turned out to be more like 15 ounces, so I am waiting for the seller to respond to a complaint. I bought mineral spirits today, and tonight I worked on mixing them.
The lanolin does not like to dissolve in room temperature mineral spirits. I put maybe 20 ounces in a saucepan and heated it to the temperature of hot bath water. The lanolin came in a plastic bag, and I could not figure out how to get all of it out, so I cut the bag open and put it in the pan. The lanolin came loose, and I was able to get virtually all of it into the mineral spirits. I did not add oil.
When it had dissolved, I used a funnel to pour it into the mineral spirits can, and that was that. I have a solution that is somewhere around 15% lanolin by weight. I poured a spray bottle full of it, so now I have a quart ready to apply.
Comes out to around $8.50 per quart, including the cost of the bottle. Cheaper, if I get the lanolin seller to refund me $1.50 for the missing ounce.
This weekend I'll shoot some of it onto some metal and see how it looks.

Hi Steve,
I found a bottle of liquid lanolin on line. Haven’t tried it yet, but might be an option if the solid lanolin doesn’t work out.

All--
For those of us with shops on HVAC, I agree with atunguyd, a dehumidifier works exceedingly well. I have always used one in both the shop and the gun room. I've got one running right now down in the vault. I'm not sure I need it, but it keeps me happy knowing that stuff is dry.
My machinery is STILL in a temperature/humidity controlled environment. Maybe not much longer, though. The house is almost finished. Then I'll start on the shop.

Dehumidifier? What's that? I've heard it's often related to something else I heard was called rust. I've seen it in pictures, but I have no frame of reference to understand what that is. Is that something I will have to worry about when I move in with you Bill?seal killer wrote: ↑Sat Nov 10, 2018 2:41 pma dehumidifier works exceedingly well.
