In the next few days, folks here in Michigan may be recalling an ice storm that hit 46 years ago.
After recently completing the refurbishing of a ground signal light built in 1963, I was tracing the history
of its installation locations and found this photo showing the signal enduring the great ice storm of '76.
The signal is to the left in the photo next to the bi-centennial gondola car.

The three-color light signal is ready for installation along the right-of-way this spring.
It's been retrofitted with LED's and retains the original "real glass" output lenses.
Now, on to the next project!

I remember the entire winter was bad. I actually received a special patch from the Detroit Free Press because they felt bad for us paper carriers. Did my route with a sled that year many times because I couldn't get anywhere on my bike and the car couldn't get out of the driveway.

Seems like only yesterday.
It was a bad winter in many areas ..even here in the mid Atlantic states.
We had a lot of running equipment freeze in the Dupont facility where I was working...things that had never been considered as "freezable"...including the incoming above ground river water line

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Anyone remember the winter of '49? It was one to behold, at least here in the west.

I don't recall that one nearly as well as the one in 1949.

Better late than never...
The storm in '49 Harold is referring to greatly effected railroad operations too.
