Mason Bogie 2-6-6T ****SOLD****

Post by ChuckHackett-844 »

I have a full set of un-machined castings produced by Richard Ulin (many bronze, lost-wax castings) for the 2.5" scale Narrow Gauge Mason Bogie 2-6-6T locomotive. For those unfamiliar with this unique engine:

One of the most interesting aspects is that the engine truck pivots under the boiler to handle the small radius curves of the Denver and South Park railroad.

I also have a complete wood cab kit with all moldings, etc.

Comes with a full set of drawings. I also understand that there was a construction article series in 7+ Railroader

There was also a

I have a steel boiler with copper flues built by Ray Panel (sp?) a well known boiler builder (Texas, now deceased). The boiler has never had water in it. Ray also built the new boiler for my Northern at the same time and it's still going strong.

I have had the castings for about 20 years so they are well "aged" ! :D

I love this locomotive but I have come to the realization that I probably will never get to it.

I do not have pictures of the castings, et. al. but, if there is enough interest, I'll dig them out (still buried from when we moved 5 years ago).

As of yet I have no idea what I will be asking for it all.

I'm too old to start on that too, Chuck. From what I've seen, they are nice models. The Mason engines were the American equivalent of the Ffestiniog's Fairlie single-bogie locos. My dad told me he liked to take a shortcut through the cab of the South Park bogie when he was going to college at Ames, Iowa, unfortunately cut up in a WW2 scrap drive. I hope you find a buyer.

The only 'For Sale' section I see is very general For Sale (lathes, etc.). Is there one here for Live Steam related items? I know about Discover Live Steam.

Chuck, always liked this design.

what is the design size for the boiler, and could this casting set be modified to fit 12” gauge?

If so, I’d be interested also.

Thanks,
Glenn

If possible would you happen to post some of the pictures? I am currently constructing my own 2.5-scale mason bogie. Also, what is the boiler size of this locomotive ?

"Your own" as in you are doing your own castings/fabrications, or with Rich's castings?

What pictures are you referring to? Construction was never started on the locomotive so I do not have construction pictures. I have the complete set of drawings, castings, cab kit, etc.

I have a boiler built by Ray Panel at Steam Age, Texas (now deceased) as per Rich's drawings.

Hmm, 7.5" to 12" ... I suppose it's possible. Cylinders, wheels, etc would all be ok but you would have to modify the cab front and build the boiler to a different scale but, yes, a lot of it would just transfer over.

If I recall correctly, the boiler I have is about 9" diameter

A combination of both. My design is based on the last surviving Mason Bogie, Torch Lake here in Michigan. But If you have castings and etc still available I would be interested in purchasing them?

Yes, I still have the castings, boiler, cab kit, drawings, etc. I have an offer from someone else. If that falls through, I'll let you know.
