Laird crosshead castings

Post by Andypullen »

Good morning All,

I needed a pair of Laird crossheads for my Ma&Pa 2-8-0. I couldn't find anything that I liked that looked correct.

So, I went to the 1930 Locomotive Cyclopedia and scaled the BLW drawing that's in there. After doing that I drew it up in Fusion 360 and had Shapeways print it in fine detail plastic. The next step was sending the model to the foundry and getting a pair cast in bronze. This is the result:

I'm going to order some more from the foundry and would like an approximate count of interested people.
The overall length is of the top bearing surface is 2.25".
The height from the wrist pin center is 1.8". I was figuring on cutting the top to fit between the guides.
The length of the hub from the wrist pin center is 1.25".
The slot for the guide is .56" wide. My guides are .625" wide.
The width of the top is .93".
The width over the wrist pin pads and the diameter of the hub is 1".
The inside pocket is .56" wide.
The wrist pin center to the union link center is 7/8".

Estimated price is $100 each.

If you need another dimension, just let me know.

Thank you for looking!

Sorry Bill!

I was originally going to build them up like you did.

Thanks Dan!

I'm using Fusion for my modeling.

Very nice detail.

When I first saw 3-d printing, this is exactly what came into my head.

Did you 3D print the piece in a castable plastic that's burned off for every piece or do they make a multi piece mold from the part and you get the 3D printed piece back as well?

I had the part printed in a resin type of material used for small models. Shapeways calls it fine detail plastic. It is printed at 104% in that material. I then sent the plastic piece to the foundry where they made an RTV mold from it so they could shoot the waxes. The mold is currently at the foundry to get some more cast.

Thanks for the compliments on the parts!
