WTB Warm White LED's

Post by VIMEguy »

Hi Folks
I'm looking for some warm white LED's for headlight bulbs for my 1/8 Scale SW1200. The LED's I've found so far are all the stark blue/white type, and I'm looking for something in the more incandescent wave length of colour range. Any body have a source for these?
Thanks
Don

I like to use t10 base bulbs with a realistic filament like these. They aren't terribly bright. You can find brighter if you go with the traditional diode layout T10s. Some useful search terms for warm white is "tungsten" and "3200k" (k stands for the Kelvin temperature of the bulb)

You did not specify what Voltage you are using.
I acquired warm white LEDs for the headlights on my two steamers. The Mikado needs 12V and the Ten Wheeler uses 3V. They both have E10 screw bases.

The results look realistic with enough light to see the rails ahead at night.

And the pics are oriented improperly AGAIN. They appear correctly everywhere but here...Sorry.

I'm still looking for a 'superbright' (500-1000 lumens) E10 12vdc bulb which will give me 10+ feet of illumination of the rails in front of the loco.
I have found some nice 'warm yellow glow' E10 bulbs, but they only give about three feet of light. At night three feet of track while running does not give me enough time to react and stop the train -- I'll be well past/over the obstruction or switch point.

The E10 socket for the 12vdc bulbs give some 6000 mcd (millicandela) at 140 degree angle == 24 Lumens, a nice soft light. By way of example, a 15w 110vac "nightlight" bulb is 225 Lumens.

Sadly, neither the Ebay or Amazon links above give operating temperature. 90 degree C = 194 degree F, my Mikdao headlight bracket can reach this temp after a day of running. I bring this up because the T10 plastic automotive sockets get very soft and fail at this temperature and I've had them melt in my front-mounted Mikado headlight.
