endmill too high when in collet

Post by timsch »

I have a 5/16 endmill in an MT3 collet right now. With a drill chuck holding the bit, it goes down much further than in the collet. At it's lowest point now, the bit is still at least 1.5" above the top of my 4" vise.

How do you deal with this predicament?

(sorry, but my actual picture is oriented correctly....)

timsch, I fixed your photo. There is a problem with the board software. Please check your private messages for hints on working around the problem.

Use this collet set to hold the mill cutters: MT3 to ER32:

https://www.amazon.com/Collet-Milling-C ... 43&sr=8-21

And you may still need to block your vice up higher.

Russ, I get PAGE NOT FOUND with that link.

Searching for "MT3 to ER32:", I do get results. Certainly looks like it would solve my problem.

It looks like a good solution, with the exception that I've not yet found one with a 3/8-16 drawbar thread. It was easy to find collets with it, but so far have only found M12 threads.

Acquire a new drawbar to fit the 1/2"-12 threads of the MT3 collet holder?

Option 2: raise the vise.

There are blocks sold for this very purpose. However, a nice tilt table or rotary table not only adds height, but also adds versatility for future projects. Also, they don't suffer from magnifying runout the way extending the endmill does.

I'd like to get a rotary & tilt/vertical table, but it would have to mount to my table, which is only 5-7/8 wide x 7-3/4" long looking from the front of the machine. It has two slots across the width and one across the length. It looks to me that a 4" size is my only option to mount on the table, but I don't see that my 4" vise would even be able to mount on one that size.
