Way Wipers for 3 in 1!

Post by 16WhiteColly »

Would like to know if anyone has added way wipers to the 3 in 1 lathe. If possible, post some pictures please.

I did.

After much research, I used F1 industrial felt. I believe it was 3/16" thick. The dovetail is 60°, and I used a nice sharp utility knife to cut it after pinching the felt between two parallels as a guide.

Secured to the carriage with a piece of aluminium flat bar. Repeat on opposite side. That was 8 years ago. Still holding up fine.

I did the same for my old lathe.
Made metal covers with screws, and put thick felt under them.

Torch, did you drill and tap the slide in-place for the way wipers mounting, without disassembly? Thanks.

I might have -- I don't remember anymore. It's also possible that the holes were pre-existing.

Found some way wipers for about $4.50 each for another machine, just do not know if I could drill and tap the holes without complete carriage disassembly. Not worth having to do that at my age.

I have a gear head 13 inch Jet lathe. The factory included rubber way wipers on the carriage but neglected to include them on the tailstock. They did the same on my old 10 inch belt drive Jet back in the late 1970 era. I ordered a set of carriage wipers from the dealer and installed them on the tailstock which was easy to remove and then drill/tap. The 13 inch machine is going to get some nice felt wipers like the Monarch at work complete with oil holes. Might even upgrade the carriage to felt and oil holes if time and energy permits.

Rather than drill and tap, perhaps you could JB Weld a couple T-nuts in place and use those.

Flatten the "spikes" on the "T" and bond it on that side to your machine to increase the mounting surface area while leaving the threads exposed.

It's not like the wiper takes a lot of stress.

I like your XY instructions.

Having 4 lathes from 3 different manufacturers
Too many things going on to bother listing them.
