Interesting cotter pin install

Post by Greg_Lewis »

Was out on a sailboat and saw this cotter pin treatment on all the pins on the boat. Makes a lot of sense, but hadn't seen that before. (Looks like a face, too....)

That was how I was taught to do it rigging sailboats. No chance of a sharp end snagging a sail or rope.

I've seen that technique used before, although I can't remember where. It certainly wouldn't be on a sailboat, as I've never spent any time around them.

It's a tidy and safe way to terminate the ends so they're gouge free, and quite easy to perform using round-nose pliers.

Also, that's done without sharp bends, which might cause failure in stainless steel.

Neat, but I wonder how hard it is to remove.

Pair of dykes and it comes right out.

Forget reuse of the pin.

I seem to remember seeing a tool specifically for performing this operation with a single squeeze.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.
