Does anyone else get this message

Post by earlgo »

When I open up www.chaski.org I get this "Not secure" notation at the top. I am using Bing and McAfee Internet Security.

Make sure you go to https://www.chaski.org, not http//www.chaski.org.
(notice the 's')
https://www.chaski.org/homemachinist

This should be secure.

https has the secure socket layer. Http does not.

Interesting, never really paid much attention but now that you bring it up, using your link takes me here
very bare bones, not secure -

Clicking on the link does take me to a secure page ( green lock and https ) -

I'm using Firefox on a Mac.

I come in on HTTP: (port 80) instead of HTTPS: (port 443, also called HTTP over TLS) and have not gotten any certificate alerts to date. He mentioned McAfee. My money is on McAfee being silly. No insults intended, but I'm completely baffled why anyone uses that junk. :D

Incidentally, there's no compelling reason to visit this site on a secure port. Nothing going on here, with the exception of log-on authentication, involves sensitive data. Also, it would be pretty obvious if the connection was to a fake website. Using a secure port means more work for both the server and the client in processing the encryption and decryption of data packets. That processing has a small but sometimes-noticeable effect on performance, causing pages to load more slowly.

What do you recommend instead of McAfee? I have used it for years with no problems, but am not stuck on it.

I'm using Avast free. Doesn't mean it's a good choice, but it has worked nicely for me. Truth is, I'm not able to judge these things, as I don't understand computers well.

We had McAfee years ago, got rid of it because of recurring billing issues, been using Norton since with no problems. No problems with either regarding security, at least that we noticed.

I don't recommend any of that stuff, as it mostly doesn't provide the protection that it is claimed to provide. I can't even start to count the number of computers that have been in our shop for virus removal that were running antivirus software.

The number one source of malware for most users of Microsoft Windows continues to be Microsoft Office files. Don't accept them in E-mail or download them from a website and your chances of getting infected are very slim.

Don't browse any website that requires that you install software to use the site. I have a client who routinely got whacked visiting an online poker site that required him to install software to play poker. He finally got the message after the third time he had to pay us to straighten out his PC, which was running McAfee's software, BTW.

Aside from that, user carelessness is what gets most people. McAfee or any other similar product cannot protect anyone from being careless and clicking on links in E-mail sent from unknown sources. Browsers are more secure (at least non-Microsoft browsers) but are not impermeable. Although it's rare with Firefox and other non-Microsoft browsers, attacks are possible. P o r n sites are the worst in that regard. :D

None of the workstations in my office are running any kind of anti-virus software. In nearly 20 years, we have never had an incident. BTW, everything gets backed up every night. If something does happen redundant restoration paths are available. If you value your files, you should back them up to removable media, ideally every night. If something does attack your machine and damage the filesystem a backup will be your only path for recovery of your files. If you carelessly click on a link in an E-mail message and ransomware encrypts your files, it will be much cheaper to restore them from a backup than it will be to pay the ransom and hope the bozo who wrote the ransomware gives you a usable decryption key.

BDD: Thanks for the IT advice. I do nearly all that you suggest, but back up only once a month or so, because I don't work from home or do anything that I need that isn't already backed up. The worst thing that happened was my personal user file was corrupted by a MS upgrade, and it took a few MS phone calls to get that going again.
Thanks again for your insight and experience.
