Qty.24 at 14" is a good bit of Iron!

How are you making the pattern? I know you do a lot of 3D printing but 14" is fairly large... multiple prints and glued together afterwards?
Hey Frank. I have access to a REALLY large printer, although I may consider spinning it up on a friends CNC in RenShape. I've got time, as I'm still recuperating from my surgery.

A little locomotive with 4 wheels on the track is a lot more fun
than a 1/2 finished one with 16 wheels on the bench!

Well...
The University of Washington (Seattle) Mechanical Engineering students modified a 4 ft. x 8 ft. CNC plasma cutter into a 3D printer.
They printed a 2-person 7.5 ft. long boat to enter into a local contest!
So...

I don't think the University of Washington is going to get involved in printing live steam parts. I also don't have the time to build or room to stuff another machine in my shop big enough to print out 1/4 scale parts for casting. I have considered having a company print out the sand molds and cast a set of cylinders, but the $16-20,000 cost estimate was a little steep for my pocketbook.

Ya, I was quoted $5500, 5 minimum, for a printed sand mold for a cylinder casting. Too rich for me.
