Re: Could I get help picking a set of reamers?

For small sizes I use a groove gage, .200 to 1.200 other to 1.00, on the same gage, also have 3 point expanding bore gage starting at 3/16. Lastly ball gages, like the telescoping gauges, but with a split ball.

Re: Could I get help picking a set of reamers?

I bought a set over over/under from 1/8 to 1/2. Chinese, work well for last 15 years. Larger sizes ebay a name brand, Morse, Regal, others. When making drivers use reamers for the bores. and on size. You need to have a .625 hole to accept a 5/8 guide when broaching the keyways, a .6235 hole will not...

Re: Eaton 6 Hydrostatic transmission $50

I have worked on these Eaton units, fairly simple disassembly/assembly. BUT except for seals there is zero parts available. Some internal parts like the levers can be made, the pistons are just steel bearing balls. And while supposedly fitted to each bore, after a year of use they fit any bore. If r...

Re: Could I get tips on dumpster diving for materials for your build?

I have bought a lot of material from ebay. Drops, odd stuff and "stated known" alloy. Although it is often mystery metal, and fails to machine as well as its supposed alloy. Second choice is a company called Yarde Metal in CT, and NY. They have an online site that has a "drop zone&quo...

Re: Exposed needle-bearings on inside of axle boxes

I have two LE Pacifics. both have needle bearings running on HARDENED Races pressed onto the axle. One of the loco's Had worn out the bushings on each of the driving rods, the needle bearimgs were in fine shape except one which got rust from sitting a long time like 20 years. There are not seals on ...

The type of tap where the chips come out the top of the tap is called a "spiral Flute Tap". Very useful for deep holes, blind holes. There are forming taps, which deform the metal into threads. Fast like the spiral taps but NO chips, Great for blind holes, PITA materials like SS, use a for...

Re: Pacific turn radius

My track is gauged about the same. The front truck was removed, and the lower edges of the links as well as the center post was killed to provide an additional 1/8 movement L & R. I then layed out a section of straight leading into a 10' section of 20 radius track. First pushed, then run on air,...

Re: Need mill work for academic research project in NJ

Its been two years since I built the Dice launcher. The Grad students had completed around 4000 dice toss's. That was July 2018. The next year a draft of results came out. Not surprising, the test showed what most everyone would have guessed. No matter how consistent the toss of the die is, once it ...

If it's a flat belt. I just would run a knurling tool across at face of it.
If a vee belt I would increase the size of both pulleys, to keep the ratio.

Glenn, Setscrews are used to hold the wheel to the axle, Not in lieu of a broached keyway and key to transmit the power.

Re: Electric drive motor specs

This is an interesting project. My chair has two 600W 3/4HP motors. The chair weight is just short of 200, and I add 150. At full speed of 6mph, any grade slows me down. A grade of 1:6 is a crawl, (And the wheelie bars are in full use.) Electronic speed controllers are great but at large amperage ne...

Re: Pacific turn radius

I will first try to give the leading truck to have a larger lateral movement. As built it moves only .125" of center. If that doesn't work looks like 25' radius or more is the fix.
